Friday Photo: Cheyenne Bottoms

Click on image for full size.

The view: Looking south over Cheyenne Bottoms (Great Bend, KS), one of the largest and most important shorebird migration points in the Western Hemisphere.

The pilot: Brian Williamson

The photographer: Dominick Decker

The airplane: Piper Comanche 250

The mission: Early morning flight to take aerial pictures of the Bottoms

The memory: The ecological significance of Cheyenne Bottoms is impressive. It is estimated that 45% of the North American shorebird population stops at the Bottoms during spring migration. We circled the area and Dominick took some nice pictures in the turn looking south over the flat Kansas landscape. It was a beautifully calm morning in Kansas and it was a true joy to see the area from above. Flying brings us so many different perspectives!
